Just before starting Marengo Pass I worked for a local custom builder and served as design lead for this home.

Last week included a progress review of our landscape design set for the wonderful clients - who continued our collaboration by hiring MPD to develop their outdoor living environment.

Walls, water, and big beautiful bluestone - we love seeing gifted installers bring a space to life! This early design helped complement a home addition with outdoor living spaces, gradually stepping down to existing grade with terraced natural stone walls and planting beds. Just off frame is an in-ground Gunite water feature and heated in-ground spa. The first timber structure I designed was a cedar log post and beam in Barrington, IL - sourced bark-on logs from the Upper Peninsula of Wisconsin, found a fabricator who kit built the logs off site and shipped in the structure ready to assemble. Obviously "porch-tastic" is not a word, but if it were, the addition of a new porch to this historic 1700's structure would be pretty porch-tastic. MPD exists to help others - in this case, illustrating another designer's plans to add an covered entry and new stoop to a central PA reception venue for their end client to see its potential.

Not everyone can read a plan, so why not make your plans easier to read?

Around 25 years ago, my job was drafting and illustrating the plans which older and more seasoned designers roughed out for in the North Shore of Chicago. One day I turned the plan at an angle and drew it in a "pop-up" birds eye view, and the owner told me he didn't have to explain the plan to the client - they imagined themselves walking around the plan and signed on the spot for construction. I drew nearly every plan in that birds eye style after that. Years later I can invest the same time into computer rendering a design, but instead of one view, I can illustrate an entire site.

Do I still like to draw by hand? Heck, yeah - but I also appreciate the efficiency of providing my clients with a way to show their potential garden spaces and helping set the expectation of what their environments could be!

One challenge is we move through our landscapes (instead of looking at one fixed point in a painting), so our canvas moves around! This option for an upcoming Peace Garden is viewed from a nearby lakeshore, as well as daily from the home's second story deck and ground-level patio. It should look engaging from every angle. Life is too short to live in an ugly setting, and we love to help others make their homes memorable and beautiful.
